Apple to pay labels post Taylor Swift’s open criticism

by Unknown  |  in entertainment at  3:29 AM

Apple has announced it will pay labels for rights to stream their music, just a day after pop star Taylor Swiftslammed the company for its three-month free trial.
In a tweet, senior vice president of internet services and software Eddy Cue wrote that Apple would pay artists during the 90-day period.

Calling the trial “shocking, disappointing and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company,” Swift, 25,

had written in an open letter she would not release her latest album “1989” on Apple Music streaming service.Swift explained that Apple’s planned three-month free trial for the service,

during which labels will not be paid for music sales, was keeping her from providing the album.”We know how astronomically successful Apple has been,

and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the three-month trial period… Even if it is free for the fans trying it out.”

She added that she is able to support herself and her team on live performances, but she is looking out for newer artists, songwriters and producers who are not yet as financially successful.

“These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles.

who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.”

“We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation,” she said.

Paracetamol ‘no good for back pain’

by Unknown  |  in health at  11:33 AM

Paracetamol is ineffective at treating back pain and osteoarthritis despite being a recommended treatment, a group of Australian researchers has warned.

Their review of 13 clinical trials, published in the British medical journal said the drug did not reduce disability or improve quality of life.

Instead, the group warned, it increased the odds of liver problems.

The NHS is to review its guidelines. Experts say patients should consult a doctor before changing medicines.

Back pain is a leading cause of disability and in the UK alone it is estimated to affect 26 million people each year.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which establishes best NHS practice, currently recommends paracetamol for both lower back pain and for osteoartritis.

However, questions have been raised about the quality of the evidence which led to the decisions.

A team at the University of Sydney assessed data from 13 drug trials involving more than 5,000 patients.

They concluded that paracetamol was “ineffective” at reducing back pain.

In osteoarthritis in the hip or knee, they found a small improvement with paracetamol. Yet the impact was so small it was “not clinically important”.

Gustavo Machado, one of the researchers, argued: “Paracetamol is the most widely used over-the counter medicine for musculoskeletal conditions so it is critical that we review treatment recommendations in light of this new evidence.

“In our research, paracetamol for low back pain and osteoarthritis was also shown to be associated with higher risk of liver toxicity in patients.

“Patients were nearly four times more likely to have abnormal results on liver function tests compared to those taking placebo pills.”

Exercise

Dr Christian Mallen, from Keele University in the UK, said options other than drugs should be the “cornerstone” of managing the conditions.

However, he added: “While the effectiveness of exercise for both osteoarthritis and spinal pain is established, we know that uptake of and adherence to exercise is poor.”

In the UK, the safety of over-the-counter drugs is being reviewed by the medicines safety regulator.

NICE said it was waiting for the results of that review before conducting its own assessment.

A spokesperson said: “Looking at all of the relevant painkillers together, instead of just one, will then provide a comprehensive overview of this aspect of managing osteoarthritis.”

Jane Tadman from Arthritis Research UK said: “We’ve known for some time that paracetamol may not work for everyone with severe pain from their arthritis, but some people find it helps them and allows them to sleep and to exercise without discomfort.

“Physical activity is probably a better and more effective way of keeping the pain of arthritis and joint pain at bay than taking currently available painkillers.”

Prof Roger Knaggs, from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: “There are other medicines, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids, which may provide better pain relief but these are associated with a range of other side-effects.

“Anybody with concerns about whether taking paracetamol could cause harm should discuss their concerns with their GP or pharmacist.”

Quirky make-up ideas and grandmom’s tips

by Unknown  |  in Lifestyle at  11:38 AM

Global beauty blogger Deepica Mutyala’s makeup tips on YouTube has earned her millions of fans. Here’s why

WIDE-AWAKE LOOK
Most people apply mascara outward, going towards their ears to create a sort of `cat eye’ look, but for a more wide awake look, apply your mascara inwards. By re-directing the lashes, your eyes will pop and look more refreshed. A great way to make your eyes twinkle is by using a light-coloured eyeliner in the water line of your eye instead of black. I like to use gold or silver eyeliner (depending on my outfit). One of my favourite looks is liquid liner on the top eye, silver liner on the bottom water line, with mascara on both top and bottom lashes. I sometimes even carry the lighter liner into the corners of my eye to act as an eyeshadow.

COCONUT OIL ROCKS!
I recently started to use coconut oil on my hair, body, and face. Yes, the same coconut oil South Asian women grew up seeing their mom put in their hair. I used to rebel when my mom wanted to put it in my hair but it’s really served as a miracle product for me. I’ve already noticed my hair look shinier, face feel more nourished, and body less dry. It’s funny how sometimes the simplest products can make the biggest impacts.

BRAID IT OUT
Indian women don’t play with braids enough because they fear that it’ll look too traditional. But there are so many ways to experiment with them. Try the voluminous messy fishtail. It’s a great way to stand out in a room full of straightened or curled hair.

MIX TWO BOLDS
A lipstick can change your entire beauty look and really make your outfit pop. It can be intimidating at first. I started with a bold red lipstick and now do everything from plums, bright pink, fuchsia, and orange shades. I challenge women to mix it up – the key is to wear it with confidence. You can make your lips look more full by using a lip liner that’s a shade or two darker than your lipstick and dabbing your lips with a highlighter. The trick is called `overlining’ your lips and has been done by several celebrities recently. I like to think of it as lip contouring.

3 MUST-DOS FOR INDIAN WOMAN
Use a brow pencil: You know that feeling you get after getting your eyebrows threaded? You look in the mirror and say to yourself “this completely changed my face”. That’s the same effect that filling in your brows does! I think it’s the product that most Indian women don’t realise they need (because we tend to already have dark, thick brows) but you can’t live without it once they see the difference it makes.

Finding a good concealer: I think if you surveyed all Indian women and asked what their number one beauty concern is, it’d be dark circles. Finding the right concealer makes a huge difference in your overall look. Of course, if you still need the extra help, the red lipstick trick does wonders.

Using a highlighter illuminator: If you want radiant skin, I have two tips: 1) Drink tons of water and 2) Find a killer highlighter. Highlighter looks great with Indian clothes.

It’s extra accentuated because of all the fun jewellery we wear.
